Artist
A contemporary artist from Zimbabwe, drawing inspiration from the vibrant colours and diverse geography of my homeland. I am drawn to painting as a reflection of different cultures and political concerns particularly conservation. Inspired by immediate landscapes and relevancies. Artist influences range from political-economic context or for their raw painting abilities. Known locally as “The eye of the people”. Painter, Lovemore Kambudzi has been a constant influence for me, a Zimbabwean artist who addresses economic issues in a surrealist fashion. Although his paintings have an animated fun aura about them due to his tachism style technique he claims that “Handingavanze chokwadi/He can’t hide the truth” in his paintings.
Building on my Degree in Contemporary Art at ATU Galway, I was able to find and shape my artistic identity as I navigated the change in landscape and culture. This transition greatly influenced my painting style, where I often blend the muted blues and greens of the Irish seascape with the fiery oranges and deep earth tones of Zimbabwe. The result is large-scale artworks created with highly textural mediums and paint, enhancing the organic flow of my work and adding depth and movement to my compositions. Conservation has always been a core value in my life, and my concern for the ecosystem serves as a driving force behind much of my work. Recently, my studies have focused on the natural seascapes of Galway, reflecting my ongoing interest in environmental preservation. In line with this ethos, I incorporate materials such as cardboard and builder’s foam, often recycled or repurposed, which subtly reinforce the conservation-oriented mindset that underpins my practice. Having learned to connect with new surroundings through painting, I now find myself drawn to exploring different cultures in my artwork as I enter this next stage of life, one filled with new travel opportunities and enriching experiences.
